When my trainer at the gym said, "Forget sit-ups and crunches," I said, "What? I've been doing them for years."
Then I discovered the pro athletes are getting into planks. And experts recognize that a lot of exercises I've sworn by are actually causing more problems than they are solving.
This approach forms the core of Raugh's book. I wish I'd had this info a couple of years ago. He's got diagnostic tests (with appropriate warnings) and detailed examples and photos of every move. The diagrams of muscles are great. I finally understand what my massage therapist has been trying to tell me.
Although the book seems targeted to the over-40 age group (or older), I'm hearing that this type of exercise is appropriate even for younger athletic types. The killer workouts are fun but they don't seem to be any more effective and they're much harder on the body.
My only quibble is that Raugh, like many PTs and trainers, come up with exercises that require space and equipment. I'm still looking for a place to "lean against the wall" or even stretch out. It's not always easy to find a convenient step or table. Some exercises have to be done correctly and I would want a trainer to make sure I wasn't doing them wrong.
But if you are serious about fitness, this book should be on your list. I'm going to show mine to my massage therapist and trainer. But I'm not giving it away. This one's for me!

Prime for Life: Functional Fitness for Ageless Living Overview
Each year, hundreds of people make the decision to leave the routines and restrictions of their daily lives and come to Canyon Ranch, the world-renowned wellness and health center in Tucson, Arizona, for a life-changing week. Within that short time, guests at the ranch reconnect with the natural world and their place in it as living, breathing, moving creatures.
In his role as fitness director of the Life Enhancement Program at Canyon Ranch, physical therapist Randy Raugh helps guests of all agesand with all ranges of fitness levelsunderstand how movement and activity will not only enrich their lives but will also protect them from disease, obesity, and the negative aspects of aging. As children, our bodies are primed to moveevery ligament, tendon, and muscle is supple and receptive to even the most sudden movements. As we age, however, our movements become more careful due to pain or fear of injury. According to Randy Raugh, it doesn't have to be this way. The latest research suggests that it’s not our bodies that compel us to slow down or stop enjoying what we used to do, but it’s our conscious connection to our bodies that diminishes. And that’s a big part of what makes us "feel old"when we don't have to at all.
In Prime for Life, Randy Raugh offers the revolutionary approach he uses with his patients at Canyon Ranch to help them achieve long, active lives. By focusing on maintaining healthy joints and providing specific strategies for doing so, Raugh shows you how to:
-Prevent injuries and heal physical damage accumulated over a lifetime

-Learn how to talk to doctors about surgeries and detect common misdiagnoses
-Discover how to create a simple fitness plan that fits into your daily routine
